POTW-2021-10-1

While making our way to Turtle City on the East Coast of Bonaire, I spotted this turtle with a couple of hitch hiking remoras and made a bee line to capture an image. While the conditions were pretty mild, the visibility suffered requiring me to get as close as possible to minimize the backscatter.

This is one of my favorite macro images of a hydroid - I believe it is a Christmas Tree Hydroid, but I'm not positive. These colonies of animals are easily overlooked, but they are stunning on closer inspection. Equipment and settings: Nikon D850 / 105mm / INON 330Z /...

November 2020 / Week 3

Typically this photo of a Yellowhead Wrasse would not be included as a POTW, but the fact that the wrasse is displaying its "vampire teeth" makes it unusual enough to be selected. This Yellowhead Wrasse is in the terminal phase, which is the most colorful of the three...

November 2020 / Week 2

I love this photo of a Queen Angel. It was feasting on sponges growing under one of the planes at The Planes dive site in Aruba. This little guy looks a bit startled when fired the shot but continued on with his business after the photo shoot. Equipment and settings:...

Sometimes you spot subjects where you least expect it. This nimble White Speckled Hermit Crab was resting about 3 feet off of the ground in the middle of a gorgonian, making it very easy to photograph. Equipment and settings: Nikon D850 / 60mm / INON 330Z / f 18/...

Diving Arashi Reef and The Antilla Wreck

Best of Tres Trapi

Best of Tres Trapi

Although the shore diving in Aruba is limited, the sites are easily accessible and the marine life is diverse. Tres Trapi, or "Three Steps" is located in Noord on the northern most part of the island, between the kite / wind surfing schools and Arashi Beach. It's a...

Squad of Squid

Squad of Squid

The dive started and ended with a large group (shoal, school or squad) of small Caribbean Reef Squid greeting the divers from the dive boat. We spotted the squid from the boat and couldn't wait to jump in the water before the squid got spooked and swam away. We were...

Sponge Reef 1 and 2

We are enjoying the 2nd dive excursion of our stay in Aruba. We visited two great reefs, which are just off of the Renaissance Hotel's private island. They are relatively shallow dives, but very colorful and full of fish. In addition, the fish were pretty friendly...
