We took some time out yesterday to drive up to Looe Key to check out a dive shop off the beaten path. Since we arrived a week ago, we’ve observed that many people are not observing the recommendation to wear a mask in public. As a result, the Covid cases have been spiking throughout Florida, including Key West. Responding to the outbreak, local officials are now requiring individuals to wear masks when outdoors if they are within 6 feet of others. We are hopeful that people will comply with the new law, but we recognize it will be a challenge to enforce.
Because of this casual attitude toward protecting self and others, we are hoping to find a dive boat with fewer divers and more space to “social distance”. I’ve also decided I need something a little lighter than a 5mm wetsuit, given the high heat and humidity in Key West. In addition, since we won’t be diving deep, the water will be warmer than we are used to. This decision led us to shopping for a thinner wetsuit near Duval Street.
Following our shopping trip, we found a nice Mexican restaurant and enjoyed a well earned lunch. So along with the complimentary chips and salsa, we also had a bottle of hand sanitizer at our table. Just wondering if this will be the new norm…
