Where In The World Are David & Leslie?

Date: June 26, 2020
Location: Duval Street, Key West, Florida, USA
Chips, salsa and hand sanitizer.

We took some time out yesterday to drive up to Looe Key to check out a dive shop off the beaten path. Since we arrived a week ago, we’ve observed that many people are not observing the recommendation to wear a mask in public. As a result, the Covid cases have been spiking throughout Florida, including Key West. Responding to the outbreak, local officials are now requiring individuals to wear masks when outdoors if they are within 6 feet of others. We are hopeful that people will comply with the new law, but we recognize it will be a challenge to enforce.

Because of this casual attitude toward protecting self and others, we are hoping to find a dive boat with fewer divers and more space to “social distance”. I’ve also decided I need something a little lighter than a 5mm wetsuit, given the high heat and humidity in Key West. In addition, since we won’t be diving deep, the water will be warmer than we are used to. This decision led us to shopping for a thinner wetsuit near Duval Street.

Following our shopping trip, we found a nice Mexican restaurant and enjoyed a well earned lunch. So along with the complimentary chips and salsa, we also had a bottle of hand sanitizer at our table. Just wondering if this will be the new norm…

We spent our last dive day in the Westpunt area at Go West Diving. Their house reef, aka "Playa Kalke" and "Alice in Wonderland", is quite lovely, with loads of sponges and "mushroom like" coral formations. The Go West dive center is one of the best we've encountered in the Caribbean. It is very...

…With Our Iguana Neighbors

We have quite a few iguanas as neighbors while staying at Playa Laguna. Like many fish that we encounter underwater, the iguanas display different personalities. Some are very timid and retreat as we approach while others you can hand feed. The iguanas also enjoy lounging in the prickly trees...

When asked what type of meal David wanted for his birthday, he said he just wanted a good hamburger. What makes a good hamburger for David? One that is rare, thick and juicy. Very pink in the center and dripping with goodness. On Thursday night, David's birthday, we went to a restaurant in Aruba...

We successfully made the trek form Aruba to Curaçao...albeit in two trips. The Divi Divi Airlines small prop plane only carried 30 or so passengers and had a very small space for luggage. They even reserved the first row for additional luggage! Two of our bags made it with us and the other two...

Today was a sad day as we had to say goodbye to Pure Diving Aruba. Well, all of Aruba really, but Pure made our stay supper enjoyable. Steve, Marcel and Marjolijn set us up from the beginning (in July) and guided us on months of boat and shore dives. Together, we saw lots of things none of us had...
