January 2021 / Week 2

This week’s photo of the week is a juvenile Slender Filefish. I spotted two of these filefish in a gorgonian soft coral. The one in the photo is approximately 1 1/2 inches in length and was doing a phenomenal job evading my camera lens. The fish were very tricky to shoot because they were hiding in the shadows and their bodies are very reflective – so trying to position the strobes to light up the fish without blowing out their reflective bodies was a challenge. My fish finally moved to the front of the gorgonian and I was able to fire off this winning shot.

Equipment and settings: Nikon D850 / 60mm / INON 330Z strobes / f13/ 1/200h / ISO 200.
Location: Director’s Bay, Curaçao

This week's Photo of the Week is a pretty common critter - a Banded Coral Shrimp - however it's not so common after all since her belly is covered in hundreds of tiny blue eggs. It's very easy to dismiss common critters, but if you move slowly and look closely, you...
