Dive An Aquarium or Two (or Seventeen)

I can’t realistically post about Grand Cayman every week until our dive trip next year and expect to keep people’s interest.  Not if I want to grow TropicLens into something more than a weekend hobby, anyway.  So I began a list of cool, fun things to do and write about until we hit either Cuba or Bonaire (still up in the air)…and then it hit me.  Why not head up to Minneapolis and take a dip into the SEA Life Aquarium.

We could do that on a long weekend.  Heck, we drive down to Alabama several times a year to visit the in-laws, so a 6.5 hour drive is nothing.  Then Leslie found out the Greater Cleveland Aquarium also has guest dive programs.  From there, the search was on.

I spent the last week trying various combinations of keywords to search for as many US aquariums with guest dive programs as I could.  We found a number of lists, but nothing comprehensive or up to date.  Three or four aquariums were mentioned in a few different articles and I saw one list with ten or so, but it was quite old including a link to the Great Lakes Aquarium which, unfortunately, has discontinued their guest dive program.

Ultimately, I was able to find seventeen.  One is on Maui in Hawaii, but the other sixteen span the continental US from east to west and north to south.  You can see the entire list at the bottom of this article.  While hitting all of these will be a goal of mine, I think I will start with a slightly smaller, but still challenging goal.  Dive 12 aquariums in 12 months and review each for you…our burgeoning TropicLens readers.

As of this writing, I am not sure of the order yet.  Leslie may not join me on all of these, so I will need to solicit some diver friends to accompany/meet me in some of the locations.  Planning will be key as I have to work within the constraints of vacation days, logistics, funding, etc .  I will share more as we get closer to setting the schedule.

Oh, one more thing.  If you know of any US aquariums that have one day dive programs, let me know.  I would be happy to add them to this list and schedule a dive at some point.

I have been diving since 2002. While my technical and editing skills have not risen as fast as my passion for shooting video, I am enjoying the opportunities I get to learn and grow. Many thanks to Leslie for her love, partnership, suggestions, wit and equally compulsive technology interest. Must...get...more diving in...
